My son Drew and I made this trip as part of a group
organized by K&K Flyfishers, Kansas City Mo. and 45 Degrees South
Flyfishing Expeditions. Getting there involved a flight to
Dallas followed by a red eye from Dallas to Santiago. After
clearing customs we then flew 3 additional hours south to Balmaceda
and then one additional hour by car to our final destination. We
arrived just in time for cocktails, dinner, and a good nights
rest.
This was my second trip to this area. I made
the trip originally in 2005. The fishing variety, quality, and
the beauty of the Andes mountains drew me back. A week long
escape from the Kansas winter makes the decision to go that
much easier.
The lodge of 45 degrees sets on the bank of the Rio
Pollux a few miles from the city of Coyhaique (pop. 35000). The
setting is gorgeous and offers first rate accommodations and great
food. Picture this: A great day floating a beautiful river ,
gourmet dinner, good friends, topped off by an evening studying the
southern stars while relaxing in the wood fried hot tub enjoying the
local wine-----and best of all knowing that you get to do it all over
again tomorrow.
The fishing program involves flloating rivers
Montana-style, wading small streams, still waters, and even stalking trout
in spring creeks. Browns dominate the local waters but bows are
also there to be had. The Simpson River offers a bonus of King
Salmon --available Jan. to Mar. The guides are a mix of seasoned
Montana stock and locals who handle English very well and provide insight
into the culture of the area. The lodge and the fishing program
are under the supervision of outfitter Jason Newmack.
