Late June found me chasing one of my favorite species,
the Northern Pike, at Kasmere Lake Lodge, a satellite fly-out camp of Nueltin
Lake Lodge managed by owners, Shawn and Amanda Gurke. The
trip began with an overnight hotel stay in Winnipeg, followed by an early
morning charter flight direct to the landing strip at Nueltin Lake.
We then jumped on a float plane for a short 25 minute flight to the 5
bedroom deluxe lodge at Kasmere Lake. This left a good
chunk of the 18 hours of daylight for my fishing partner, Dr. Rick
Hammel and myself, to wet a line.
Kasmere Lake was a fly-out lake for Nueltin Lake
Lodge up until 10 years ago. At that time the owners decided to
construct a deluxe lodge at the twenty mile long lake. Here
we found pike, lake trout and grayling in good numbers. Our
eight day stay produced a few trophies in all three
species. A variety fo flies took the pike and lakers with most of
the grayling coming on small drys. The grayling averaged 15 inches
with Dr. Hammel taking a 19 inch beauty. The pike and lakers topped
out at just over 40 inches. Our most productive days involved a
portage to an additional lake as well as a fly-out ($375/person) to a neighbouring
body of water. These additional options helped fill out the 8
day trip.
Cost of the trip----$3600 for 4 days guided
fishing
Additional 4 days ---- $1000
8 day total $4600
Not included---hotel in Winnipeg
The lodging, food, and amenities of the lodge were
all first rate. The native guides did a good job of putting us on
fish. Additional information on the many options of Nueltin Lake
Lodge and their entire operation can be found by checking out their
website at www.nueltin.com/
